How our perception of the ocean changed – 70 years of IO RAS involvement
The Ocean, our blue planet, has always been fascinating people. To use its resources – fisheries, transport – knowledge was established to better and safer use these resources. So coastal phenomena such as currents, tides and waves needed to be understood and used. Classical physics and mathematics drove this understanding ever since. The focus was mainly on coastal regions; the open ocean was still unknown. However, sea-faring always had a strong attraction leading to venturing to sea.
