In 1949, the Institute has at its disposal first research vessel "Vityaz" with a displacement of 5.7 thousand tons. It has been specially converted for oceanographic work ship, whose name is linked to a series of scientific discoveries that brought fame to national science. Starting with a comprehensive research in the Far Eastern seas, "Vityaz" and then worked in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and completed its work in the Atlantic. Currently, the "Vityaz" is functioning in Kaliningrad as the World Ocean Museum.
Subsequently Research Institute fleet replenished with new large vessels "Akademik Kurchatov", "Dmitri Mendeleev", "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh", "Professor Shtokman". Later, a new "Hero" and equipped with modern acoustic equipment Court "Akademik Sergey Vavilov" and "Akademik Ioffe". To date, as part of the scientific fleet based in Kaliningrad and Gelendzhik were three large-capacity vessels (tonnage of more than 6 tonnes.) - "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh", "Akademik Sergey Vavilov" and "Akademik Ioffe", two of medium (more than 1 tons) -.
